Baja 2007

Baja California Sur - January 2007

Ashland to Cabo

Andy took us to the airport on a very cold morning with light snow on the ground. Flights were uneventful from Medford to LA, and LA to Cabo. It was quite warm when we got there, but was already starting to rain, off and on. The airport is beyond (east and north) of San Jose del Cabo, pretty much on the Mar de Cortez side of the cape. We first had to drive around the whole cape to get to Cabo San Lucas before getting on highway 19 going north on the Pacific side. Of course I got lost in Cabo but eventually got on the right road.

Arriving in El Pescadero

The highway was a narrow two lane and I was glad that Linda was driving as it was getting dark. When we got to El Pescadero we drove past our turn a couple of times as we couldn't see the landmark "brick building". Then we really got lost on a maze of rutted sand and dirt roads. We soon learned that directions don't mean much in Mexico. I should have know when I was reading someone else's vacation blog about spending hours following someones "simple" directions to a farm in this same area. The fact that it was dark made it impossible. I could see, however, that we were driving by really nice small farm fields. I could see that one had a new bean crop coming up. After a while, we knocked on someone's door who was kind enough to lead us to our destination in his truck. Turned out to be a young couple from Colorado. We weren't far at all but could never have found it without help. You can see the dirt roads and farm fields in this Google Earth photo. The darker brown on the left near El Pozo Hondo is the native desert. The dark green on the right is a thick palm grove.

Casa Simpatica

Gary Faulk is a crusty old guy who built a really nice place but then let it get run down through lack of caring. Linda complained about it not being clean, which of course put them at odds and pretty much ruined Linda's experience there. Gary did have some nice young people, Kevin and Anna, helping him out and Anna sprung right up and cleaned up the outside kitchen area. There was a nice barbecue grill built in to the counter of the kitchen and we had our best meal of shrimp, peppers, and onions, cooked in olive oil and tequila in foil on the grill. We repeated this several times, but it tasted the best on the first night. We got to buy some fresh fish and the shrimp right at our door at that location
