New Year's Day Ride to Buena Vista

Started out around noon as the fog had lifted and the day was looking promising. My
goal was to ride to Buena Vista, home to an old ferry crossing I wanted to see. I headed north on Independence Highway to Springhill Road and then north on Buena Vista Road. There were several parks with access to the Lukiamute River, which was running big and muddy.

There was a short climb just before the road dropped down to Buena Vists, and at the top of the hill was this interesting octagonal house.

The views were quite spectacular from up on the hill. You could see Mt. Jefferson from several angles. There is now town, but a cluster of homes up off the river. Down on the river next to the ferry landing was a nice park.

Willamette River
The Willamette was flooding part of the park. That's the ferry landing on the far side.

The ferry was closed due to high water. It is supposed to open again when the river goes down. The ferry itself was no where in sight.

Walk your bike on the ferry

It was very steep going down past this sign. I could see how they'd have a problem with people blasting down the hill onto the ferry.

It had warmed up nicely and I had a great ride home. The out and back was 35 miles. I'm looking forward to doing it again when the ferry is running and doing a loop back on the other side of the Willamette.
